Trust Jesus and Avoid Legalism
Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:24-26).
The law (the commandments of God) became a tutor to lead people to Christ. A tutor is a servant whose job is to teach and train a child in school. In olden days, the tutor was strict; he scolded his students and sometimes was considered harsh. However, the child didn’t need a tutor once he became an adult.
In ancient Israel a male child had his Bar Mitzvah (son of the Covenant) and a young maiden had the Bat Mitzvah. In Roman society the young man became of age as he arrived at the Toga Virilis (full Roman citizenship). The Christian believer becomes a child of God by faith in Jesus (John 1:12-13). The law does not save anyone but helps bring one to Christ by God’s grace alone; it teaches, as a tutor, the unbeliever’s need of Jesus Christ as Savior. Obey God’s law out of love (John 15) and gratitude for all He is and all that He has done, but not to get saved or stay saved.
God Blesses His People with All Spiritual Blessings
If a boy came to me in Wal-Mart and asked me to buy him a toy, I would be nice and polite, but most likely I would decline to buy him the gift. He needs to ask his own father or mother for the toy. Why? Because he is not my child. I’m reluctant to purchase a toy for the child since he doesn’t have the rightful position as my child. My son is my son and I bless my children more than any other children. My kids have me wrapped around their little fingers. I do not have to strive to bless them and give them things. I have to actively strive not to spoil them. It’s my heart as a father to bless my own children.
God, so much more than I ever could, blesses His children in Christ. He gave us everything in Jesus. The child of God has justification, sanctification, the Holy Spirit, the Word of God, Heaven, and the complete forgiveness of sin. Our Heavenly Father doesn’t parcel out one little bean or just one little penny; He has given us all spiritual blessings in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). The sons and daughters of God have the rightful position as children and God supplies all our needs through the wonderful Savior Jesus Christ.
Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another—to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God (Romans 7:4).
