John MacArthur opened The Master’s Seminary in the mid 1980’s in Southern California. Since Dr. MacArthur is an outstanding biblical expositor and a pastor who leans heavily on the Puritans, it shouldn’t be of great surprise that TMS has become Presuppositional in its approach. Additionally, it appears that TMS is committed to a robust Van Tilian apologetic methodology. This is good news for the Christian community inasmuch as PA is faithful to Scripture and TMS’s influence will eventually add more depth and a needed diversity to the Evangelical apologetic landscape.
Below is a link to a few The Master’s Seminary’s entry-level classroom videos on PA. There are many vital truths presented in these lectures and it yields a fine beginning for the seminary. I would add a few cautions: the instructor makes a few imprecise statements throughout (in his initial contrast of Evidentialism and PA he imprecisely asserts that McDowell’s approach is not wholly dissimilar to PA). Furthermore, the work of John Frame is presented without any awareness that many Vantilians disagree with selected ideas from Frame. Bahnsen discussed some of these issues on numerous occasions. I say this as one who has gained much from Frame’s ministry (I wrote detailed reviews of many of Frame’s books: http://thelordgodexists.com/2012/05/colossal-collection-of-many-fine-essays-on-frames-academic-contribution/ and http://thelordgodexists.com/2011/09/book-review-the-doctrine-of-the-word-of-god-by-john-frame-2/ ). Nonetheless, TMS may have some work to do before they are in the league with WTS, CTS and RTS. However, I and many PA advocates welcome the knowledge that TMS is Presuppositional in its apologetic methodology.
